We understand that being charged with a crime is an extremely stressful experience.

When the public defender is appointed to a case, several things must occur immediately:

1. A physical file and electronic file is created for your case

2. Your case is assigned to an attorney

3. Your attorney reads the charging documents, the police reports, and any media (surveillance videos, photographs, etc) received in discovery.

It is important that we have a chance to talk to you as early in the case as possible. This way we can understand your perspective of what happened and be in a position to present favorable information about you when the time is right.

The judge will order you to make an appearance in court on a specific date and time. It is extremely important that you are on time. If you appear late, the court may issue a bench warrant. A bench warrant can result in you being arrested and taken to jail.

Making a good impression is particularly important if you are appearing in court. You don’t need to wear a suit, but it is a good idea to look respectable.

Do everything possible to avoid new charges. Not only can new charges result in you being remanded into custody, but you can be exposed to sentencing enhancements for committing a crime while you have a pending case.
